Shavuos: Ma'amar # 7- Maamar #7- Appreciating what another person did for you is called Hakaras Ha’tov (lit. Recognizing the good). The Ramban understands the “test” of Har Sinai as a challenge to recognize the good that Hashem did for us in giving us His torah. This manifests itself differently when we are recognizing the good that another “person” does for us, verses when we are recognizing the good that Hashem does for us. Why, of all things, is kabbalas hatorah (receiving the torah) the test and not the splitting of the sea or receiving maan in the desert for forty years? Accepting a ride from someone without recognizing the good they did for me is not nice. Even not appreciating a mitzvah like tefillin is merely a deficiency in good character. However, lacking a proper appreciation for the Torah creates a lack in the Torah study itself.
