Description

We will study the origins of and purpose of the fast of Esther, and we will be surprised to learn that the nature of this fast is far from clear. We will present four different approaches to the origin of Ta'anit Esther. Why is this fast different than other fast days in its status? Why do we fast on Thursday when Purim falls out on Sunday, don't we always postpone a fast? Why is the 13th of Adar call "Yom Knisa LaKol"? Is ta'anit esther part of Purim or is it a fast day unto itself? According to the Ramah we can be more lenient on this fast than any other; this was not a fast day established as a Rabbinic requirement like all the others. Paradoxically, Esther is stricter than the other fast days & is a יום קבוע which doesn't require הכרזה.
