Description
p. 4 - The proper perspective on working on our middos (character traits). Working on our middos is not merely a peripheral issue. Just a nail holding up a picture, or the main beam in the house? Are my middos a central part of my life and my avodas Hashem (service of G-d)? The Alshich HaKodesh on "Veshachanti besocham (I shall dwell within them)" - I shall dwell in "you," in each and every Jew. How is it that the early chassidim (devout ones) were able to hold on to and remember all their learning? The ru'ach rah (evil spirit): equally present in the one who forgets to wash "nagel wasser" (the morning washing of the hands) and the tax cheat. Tikkun hamidos (improving our character) and Torah learning are NOT two separate worlds. Learning Shas (the Talmud) does not free us from improving our charater. The 49 days of sfiras ha'omer (counting the days between Pessach and Shavuos) are a time of improving our middos. Being a "nice guy" is not enough - we must make ourselves into a vessel to receive Hashem's Torah
