Oros HaTorah, Perek 13, 6th piece. The way of learning of the Torah of Eretz Yisrael is to learn the clalim (the general principles) before the pratim (details). The Tanna D'Vei Eliyahu says that Nishmas Yisrael (the collective Jewish soul) has a higher spiritual root than the Torah. Only in Eretz Yisrael can the Talmidei Chachamim (Torah scholars) both access such a high level and yet also fall into the deepest levels of physical and spiritual weakness and smallness. Tosafos is the embodiment of the Torah of Chutz L'Aretz (outside of the Land). The chutzpah in this generation is so great because the neshamos (souls) want more, they want clarity in learning and they want to know why. The Torah is a vast web where everything is interconnected, and when the kids hear it, they get very excited.
