Description

We will study the question of reassigning a synagogue as a study hall and the reverse. This issue must be analyzed in the light of the principle of "Maalim BaKodesh", we may upgrade in Kedusha, "VeAyn Moridim", we may not downgrade in sanctity. The underlying logic of our Sugya is that the sanctity of a Beit HaMedrash, designated for the mitzva of Torah study, supersedes the sanctity of a Beit HaKnesset, designated for the mitzva of prayer. In this shiur we will study a similar sugya in Brachot 8a which addresses the question: should one daven in a Beit HaKneset or in a Beit HaMedrash, if he has two options? The Rambam codifies the two sugyot in two different chapters of Hilchot Tefilla & seems to be separating the two sugyot. Why?
