How can we bring ourselves to feel the true reality of the world? If we view death in the right light, it is exhilarating and not morbid. Sick people are in touch with the truth. We can only experience true joy once we give up on this world. Mitzvos cause us to feel alive and fulfilled. We should not need tragedies to force us to face death. We should seriously contemplate why we are alive. We should imagine being told that our days were numbered chas veshalom, and we should calculate what would be important to us.
