Description

The two different levels of our separation from gashmius (physicality) are symbolized by smoke and steam. Smoke is the result of the clash of the fire of ruchnius with gashmius. We only realize how far we are from Hashem after we burn up the gashmius of this world. The joy of Shulchan Orech (the meal on Seder night) only comes after experiencing the bitterness of maror (the bitter herbs). The smell of besamim (spices) brings oneg (delight) and revives the soul, because it enters the body without substance.
