Rabbi Bernstein was born in Aickson, near Kovno. He studied in Slobodka and was known there as the illui from Sapizishok. In addition to his greatness in Torah, he was an engineer who excelled in mathematics. When he came to America in 1894, he refused to use his ordination as the source of his livelihood. Rabbi Bernstein was among the founders of Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. He published his chiddushei Torah in many Torah journals.
