Description

The Mishnah (Megilah 1:5-6) rules that we do not read Megilah on Shabbat and that, unlike other occasions which conflict with Shabbat, such as Tish'ah b'Av, we fulfill the Mitzvah earlier, rather than later. The reason for not reading Megilah on Shabbat, however, is subject to dispute in the Bavli, as well as a surprising turn in the Yerushalmi. We explore all three approaches, and the three occasions where this rule seems to apply - Shofar (if 1st day RH falls on Shabbat), Lulav (if 1st day Sukkot falls on Shabbat) and Megilah.
