The Shulchan Aruch writes: if one places ash in the hot water before washing dishes, even if there is grease stuck to the plates, it is permissible because the ash mixes with the [milk] grease [respectively and the meat grease respectively] to impart an adverse taste [before the milk & meat mix]. The Shach (95:21) says that no halachic authority mentioned this. Additionally, if ashes work to impart an adverse taste, why didn’t Tosfos use this to defend Rabbaynu Tam (Chullin 100a-b, bshikadum) regarding kosherizing the largest Midianite pot?
