Description

The Midwives, Shifra and Puah, play a heroic role at the beginning of the Egypt story - but who are they? Why are there only two midwives for the Hebrew population? When their fear of God led them to disobey Pharaoh's monstrous orders, "He made houses for them" - who made these houses? For whom were they made? What sort of houses are these? Solving these local exegetical problems may give us a window into some of the larger issues which confound the reader.
