Description

The enigmatic story of the דודאים (mandrakes) which Reuven picked, brought to Leah but which Rachel desired and then bartered for a night with Yaakov, has curious parallels with an incident in the interactions between Esav and Yaakov. Identifying a broader theme in Beresheet and noting the numerous symmetrical analogues with a vital scene in the early lives of Yaakov and Esav, we propose a dramatic reading of the passage with ontological import for Yaakov.
