The story of Sodom and its destruction is usually understood to be about a violent town, the citizens of which are not above gang-rape. We typically understand the call of the crowd - "send out the men that we may know them" as a shrill demand for sexual license with them - and we, accordingly, are shocked when Lot offers his two daughters in their stead.
