Description

Why might a Jewish man appreciate secular fine art? Secular fine art begins in the 16th century with Pieter Bruegel who was a Netherlandish Renaissance painter known for his landscapes and peasant scenes (Genre Painting). This revolution in European art (leaving Christian art on the back burners) reaches its pinnacle in the 17th Century in the Dutch Masters including Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Hals. Why do we appreciate this art? Man is a hybrid made up of intellect and emotion. How does fine art give expression to the emotional part of the human soul? We will discuss Rembrandt's relationship to the Jews, especially to his 'Rabbi', and his Biblical art. The almost super-human achievements of the Dutch Masters.
