The first proof for our Chakirah: The Tosfos in Bava Metzia [ק"ה: ד"ה על] say that if the one touching the מת is a גוי, then there is no טומאה בחיבורין if one touches this גוי. So write Tosfos [שבת י"ז: ד"ה אמר] that פשוטי כלי עץ [flat wooden utensils] that touch a מת and a person is touching the כלי, since פשוטי כלי עץ are not מקבל טומאה - the person is טהור.

These sources clearly point to the first way, that the way טומאה בחיבורין works is that the person touching the טומאה becomes an אבי אבו הטומאה and the person touching him is touching an אבי אבות and thereby becomes an אב הטומאה. So in this case where the connector is not טמא - the one touching him/it is also not טמא. If however we learn the second way that the connector creates a connection between the one touching him and the מת, then why wouldn't the person become טמא in these two cases?! Who cares that the גוי and פשוטי כלי עץ aren't טמא?! They connect this person to the מת. We are compelled to say that Tosfos learns like the the first way we presented.

Tosfos Ri Hazaken [שבת י"ז מהדורת מכון אופק] says that a person touching the פשוטי כלי עץ IS טמא!!

"כיון דמטעם חיבורין מטמינן מה לי אם מקבל מה לי אם אינו מקבל".

It doesn't matter what the status of the פשוטי כלי עץ is - the כלי connects the man to the טומאה and he is thus טמא. Tosfos Ri Hazaken learned the second way.
