Where is God's Presence? לשכנו תדרשו or ושכנתי בתוכם?
- 44 min 54 sec
The "Sin of the Scouts" which informs most of Parashat Shelach, carries within it the doubt of whether Hashem's Presence is amidst the people - to which Kalev and Yehoshua answer "Hashem itanu" - God is, indeed, with us" - implying that the people weren't sure of God's accompanying presence. We explore the broader issue of God's intense presence, called "residence" or שכינה and whether it chiefly resides in a specific place (as implied in Devarim 12, 1 Melakhim 8 and numerous other texts) or among the people (as implied in various texts) and whether, as a result, the Shekhinah goes "into exile" with the people, as Yehezqeel describes. This inquiry edges up to Halakhic discussions as well as both theological as well as mystical elements.
