"סוכה שהיא גבוהה למעלה מעשרים אמה פסולה".

The first Mishna in Succah says that a succah higher than 20 amos is disqualified. The Gemara says that until 20 amos one can see "שלטא ביה עינא" and the same thing regarding a beam of an alleyway on Shabbos.

Rashi says [Bamdbar 9-18]:

שנינו במלאכת המשכן, כיון שהיו ישראל נוסעים היה עמוד הענן מתקפל ונמשך על גבי בני יהודה כמין קורה וכו', כיון שהיו ישראל חונים עמוד הענן מתמר ועולה ונמשך על גבי בני יהודה כמין סוכה וכו'. 

The pillar of cloud is compared to a beam and a succah. Why? Maybe to teach us that just like one must see the beam and the succah, so too the Jews saw the special Divine providence as they traveled through the desert. 

That is the meaning of the pasuk [Bamidbar 14-14] "'כי עין בעין נראה אתה ה" - Ayin Bi-ayin means שלטא ביה עינא. We could see Hashem's שכינה and he watched over us. עין בעין. 

["ללוי אמר"] 

The pasuk [Yeshayahu 52-8] says: 

קוֹל צֹפַיִךְ נָשְׂאוּ קוֹל יַחְדָּו יְרַנֵּנוּ כִּי עַיִן בְּעַיִן יִרְאוּ בְּשׁוּב יְ-ה-וָ-ה צִיּוֹן.

At the end of days we will see Hashem's presence clearly with our eyes and he will see us. עין בעין יראו. And the pasuk continues "בשוב ה' ציון" - when he return to ציון. About the עולי רגלים it says [Sanhedrin 4b]

דתניא יוחנן בן דהבאי אומר משום רבי יהודה בן תימא: הסומא באחת מעיניו - פטור מן הראיה. שנאמר יֵרָאֶה יִרְאֶה - כדרך שבא לראות כך בא ליראות. מה לראות בשתי עיניו - אף ליראות בשתי עיניו !"

When we went to the Beis Hamikdash we "saw" Hashem and were "seen" by Hashem. That is the uniqueness of the Beis Hamikdash and so we will merit at the end of days when Hashem returns to ציון!!
