While all of Parshat Vayakhel deals with the construction of the Mishkan, the opening three verses focus on Shabbat. What is the connection between Shabbat and the Mishkan? Why are the 39 melachot, the 39 categories of prohibited activity on Shabbat, based on the work done to create and maintain the Mishkon? We offer insight into the connection between the Mishkan and Shabbat produced by this Parsha in a way that deepens our understanding of both as well as adds meaning to our practical observance of Shabbat every week.
