Description

Semester 3: Shi'ur 6. After discussing over the past few classes how rabbinic interpretations interact with and appear in the archaeological record, we now turn to the question of if (and if so, how) rabbis themselves appear in the archaeological record. This requires an investigation into the history of the term "rabbi," and what else that term might have signified. Conclusions are drawn for our understanding of continuity between ancient and modern Jewish leadership.
