Description

The dispersed stones after the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed. Our hearts are so hardened that it is difficult for us to experience the sense of loss over the churban (destruction). The Chasam Sofer asks whether Hashem is lacking anything while we are in exile? We still say "Amen, yeheh shmeih rabbah..." (may His great and exalted name be blessed...). A cry is heard more clearly and loudly in the stillness of the night. It is easier to forget our pain during the day when we are distracted. But still, "bei uns is veih" (we are hurting). A person's individual place of pain is his source of tears. What is expected of us on 9 B'Av? Often, the real pain begins after the mageifah (plague [here: disaster]) has ended; when we finally have freedom and time to think, we are filled with the terrible realization of what has been lost. The sin'as chinam (baseless hatred), terrible name-calling and fighting, even between mitzvah (commandment) observant Jews is a sign that we don't remember that we come from a single father.
