Description

Last year we discussed two possible definitions of Shvat with regard to Rosh HaShana LeIlanot. Is Shvat a new year for the fruit trees; or is Rosh Hashana Alef Tishrei? According to the latter opinion - quoted in the Yerushalmi and reflected in the words of the Ran - Shvat is nothing more than a "Gilui Milsa". The Turei Even raises two objections against this definition, Rabbi Ilson raised a third based on a Yerushalmi. In this shiur we will attempt to formulate the opinion of Tos' on this fundamental issue, an opinion which integrates a Scriptual basis for Rosh Hashana LeIlanot with the logic of "most of the rains have fallen". Note: last year's shiur can be found on this site.
