Description

The gemara in Moed Katan rules that on the occasion of a death in the city, all the residents in the city are prohibited to engage in regular commercial activities, and must redirect themselves to tzorchei ha-mes. This shiur analyzes this halachah- what is the nature of the prohibition; does it inhere in each individual or in the city as a whole?; under what conditions does it apply?; what is the underlying conceptual and ethical foundation of the prohibition?
