Pesach 5761

1. Pesach = passover. על שום שפסח. Why does it mean that הקב"ה passed over? He's not a דמות ודמות הגוף?

2. כיון שניתן רשות כו' - didn't Avraham say: חלילה לך להמית צדיק עם רשע?

3. The Torah says: והיה כי יאמרו אליכם בניכם מה העבודה הזאת לכם, ואמרתם זבח פסח הוא לה' אשר פסח על בתי בנ"י במצרים בנגפו את מצרים ואת בתינו הציל ויקוד העם וישתחוו. And Rashi says: על בשורת הבנים. Question: The child here is the בן הרשע. Why should they give thanks for בשורת הבנים?

4. ואשא אתכם על כנפי נשרים ואביא אתכם אלי. Rashi: הנשר הזה אינו מתיירא אלא מן האדם שמא יזרוק בו חץ, לפי שאין עוף פורח על גביו, לכך נותנם על כנפיו, אומר מוטב יכנס החץ בי ולא בבני. אף אני עשיתי כן ויסע מלאך הא' ויבא בין מחנה מצרים ... והיו מצרים זורקים חצים ואבני בליסטראות והענן מקבלם. Question: How could the חצים of the Egyptians harm the רבש"ע?

חידושי הרי"ם: The "arrows" are the טענה of the ס"מ ושר של מצרים that הללו עובדי ע"ז. Hashem's saving כלל ישראל seems to fly in the face of just; it is פוגע in the מידת המשפט. But הקב"ה accepts that פגיעה for the sake of His children.

5. But if there really is a טענה, then why does he save us?

Midrash: אמר לו הקב"ה (לס"מ) שוטה שבעולם, והלא לא עבדום אלא מתוך שעבוד ומתוך טירוף הדעת, ואתה דן שוגג כמזיד ואונס כרצון. Even if - on the surface - they were עובדי ע"ז Hashem sees deeper and knows that deep down every Jew wishes to serve הקב"ה; but the pressure of slavery, the pressure of the יצר הרע, the pressure of גלות and corrupt society distract him.

6. The שטן can only sees what's on the surface. זה כלל גדול, ודברנו מזה. Therefore, כיון שניתן רשות למשחית אינו מבחין - he can't tell the difference between ישראל ומצרים, since they both - on the surface - are עובדי ע"ז. Only הקב"ה knows what in the heart of each Jew.

7. That is the deeper meaning of אשר פסח על בתי אבותינו במצרים - he passed over the surface appearance, the בית.

8. Therefore when the בן הרשע says מה העבודה הזאת לכם - the answer the Torah gives is: אשר פסח על בתי אבותינו - even the רשע has hope, because the fact that הקב"ה was פוסח in Egypt even though we were עובדי ע"ז shows that there is a center of קדושה in each Jew - even in a seeming רשע.

And having heard that - ויקוד העם וישתחוו - על בשורת הבנים - even of the בן הרשע.
