Why is a mitzvah done out of a sense of obligation superior to a mitzvah performed of one's own volition? This is somewhat counter-intuitive and countercultural, especially in an era in which an individual's spiritual expressions are extolled regardless of whether or not they have been commanded. Conversely, what is the value of a mitzvah that has not been commanded of the performer? What are the benefits - and what are the limitations? Delivered in Hebrew at the Modiin Kollel in Israel.
