"Greater is the person who performs a mitzvah as commanded than one who performs a mitzvah not having been commanded." Why is this so? It is especially complicated in the modern world which prizes choice and volunteer service. What are the parameters of this principle? What is the value of mitzvot performed by those who are not commanded? Are there any limitations?
