They served as a protection against improper decorum (Mitzvah 388). [Rav Asher Weiss (Minchas Asher, Bamidbar 2) suggests an answer to the Minchas Chinuch's question. Perhaps the guards were unnecessary during the day, since the daily avodah itself created the requisite atmosphere of respect.]
