Description
The beginning of the sixth chapter of Yoma presents an ideal of having the two goats for Yom haKippurim be "twinned" in size, look, value - and be purchased together. The Gemara then cites several other "twinned" animals in Halakha - but none of those others have their unique destiny determined by גורל (lottery?). We examine lotteries in Tanakh, and suggest the unique role of these twinned goats and their roots in our ancestry - and how that ancestry plays out throughout history. This shiur was given in the "DIVE" series, "diving into the Daf", which is a weekly shiur at Young Israel of Century City where we delve into topics raised by that week's study of Daf Yomi.
