Rabbi, I am a very long time virtual student. Thank you for enlightening me on so many topics, from Eiruv to Agunah etc Because you will soon teach re the two personalities I list above, I would like to share some information. I was at Mirrer Yeshiva high school in 1969 when RMK (Kahane) was 'big'. At times, when in the Beis Medrash, I saw him stopping in for a word with Rav Shmuel Berenbaum zt"l Many of my friends joined JDL and some even went to camp JDL (pronounced je-dell). I noticed that many of my JDL class mates, often left after a while and I wondered why these friends did not remain for long in JDL activities. In 1970 I made aliyah (I live in Michigan now) to learn with with Rav Gustman at Netzach Yisroel. I recall seeing you a/or your students b/c BMT were using a small 'pension' right next to our yeshiva. I would often see RMK walking in Yerushalayim. I asked RMK why so many teenagers joined him with a fire in their belly, and within a year they stopped and left the JDL. RMK answered me, 'I wonder about that myself'. I then asked my teacher of handwriting analysis, Rabbi Haim Lifshits obm of French Hill, what he thought about this question. RHL answered, 'teenagers can be great idealists but also have other passions, meeting girls, earning money to buy cars, planning their career, sports, studying Torah etc and so their 'idealistic fanatical' stage could not last long. There was too much competition for their time. The next time I saw RMK I shared with him what RHL had answered. RMK reflected for a moment and said the answer of RHL made sense to him. He seemed to appreciate this insight. As you know, RMK was a gentle man, no one I knew ever saw him being violent. His students, like the members of the "Chayah Squad" were not that docile. Hence the tragedy of the bombing that killed an innocent secretary at her work. Regarding Rav Shlomo Carlebach, a new friend said to me in 1982, "history will judge RSC as important a figure as the Baal Shem Tov". I almost laughed out loud but I controlled myself as he was a new friend! After a few weeks, I began to think maybe my friend was right! Shabbis used be so limited in simcha, and the shabbis davening was a soul-ess 'niggun' for Lecha Dodi and Kail Adon etc And the post 6 day war Baal Teshuva movement etc Perhaps my friend was right after all! BTW I never saw RSC in a short sleeve shirt. This observation includes any photo or Video I watched. I think his Yekke background is the reason. Than you for all your Torah and Zionist teaching.
