Description

For Mishpatim we will study the verse ורפא ירפא & seek to understand the Torah's license for medical practice. We will look at the Ramban in Bechukotai and try to get a glimpse of the ideal world of the Ramban and the Torah's ambivalent attitude towards medicine. We will see that in two places Rashi assumes that a sick person should turn to Hashem in prayer rather than to the medical practitioner. The Mishna in Nedarim on the other hand presumes an obligation on the רופא to implement medical care. The Iben Ezra limits the permission of the physician to external injuries. In the case of internal injuries all is left to God. The Shulchan Aruch limits the license to practice medicine to the top expert in the field; anyone else is a שופך דמים.
