Description

This is a conceptual analysis of Tisha Bav shechal lihiyos beShabbos. There is a controversy regarding this case with many ramifications. We will present a thesis that this controversy is rooted in the very nature of Tisha Bav itself - on a regular year when the 9th of Av falls on a weekday. Our anlysis will lead us to the unique approach of R' Yochanan in both the Yerushalmi and the Bavli. The enemies set torch to the Mikdash on the 9th of Av but the Mikdash was consumed on the 10th of Av. R' Yochanan sees the 10th of Av as the fast day designated for Aveilus; in practice, however, the implementation of this concept is left to Tisha Bav shechal lihiyos beShabbos. Thus in our case, the Yom Taanis/Yom Avelus is in fact the 10th of Av. נפק"מ
