Description

Even when we are promised a miracle, nevertheless we must do whatever we can based on natural law as if no miracle is going to happen. The Yerushalmi in Yoma explains why a Kohen Gadol must take certain precautions even when there is no real fear since we are guaranteed a miracle. Precautions were taken to avoid any indirect spoilage to the Lechem HaPanim despite the fact that the breads were always miraculously fresh. The Ramban points out that despite the Divine Promise that Israel will defeat its enemies & conquer the Land, we still must prepare for war as if there was no divine promise. The principle of אין סומכין על הנס comes to teach us something important about miracles and our relationship to nature. Why is nature so significant?
