Description

The license for the Chachomim to introduce a new mitzva and not violate Bal Tosif, is the Kiyum Deoraita, which, according to Rabbenu Daniel HaBavli, is the mitzva of Kiddush Hashem. Purim was the breakthrough that established the precedent for creating a rabbinic obligation - a new mitzva - if the obligation reaches fruition in a kiyum deoraita. The mitzva of Kiddush Hashem is achieved when the Jew declares that Hashem intervened in human affairs and brought about a miracle on behalf of the nation of Israel. Publicizing the miracle is a reflection of Hallel, the expression of gratitude to Hashem. The Rambam defines the days of Chanuka as days of Simcha (joy) & Hallel. We suggest that the foundation of the obligation of Hallel is Simcha.
