Masechet Yoma 4a-b, what happened at the time of Matan Torah, did the cloud surround the mountain, or did the cloud surround Moshe? What was the purpose of the 6-day פרישה of Moshe Rabenu, was it a process of sanctification to prepare Moshe for entry into the מחנה שכינה, or was it a preparation for Moshe to spend 40 days on the mountain without eating or drinking, or a preparation for receiving the wisdom of the Torah in awe and trembling? Only according to the first approach can we find a source for Reish Lakish in the Parsha of Mt. Sinai for the requirement of the Kohen Gadol to implement פרישה prior to Yom Kippur.
