ספר המצות הקצר , מצות עשה לח. מצות עשה ליתן צדקה לעניי ישראל. שנאמר (דברים טו, יא): "פתוח תפתח את ידך וגו'", ודרשו חז"ל (ספרי שם): "פתח תפתח" אפילו כמה פעמים. ועוד נאמר (ויקרא כה, לה): "והחזקת בו גר ותושב [היינו מי שקיבל עליו לקיים שבע מצוות בני נח, שמחוייבים אנו להחיותו] וחי עמך". ונאמר עוד (שם): "וחי אחיך עמך". וצריך ליתן כפי מה שראוי לעני, ולפי מה שחסר לו אם אין לו כסות, מכסים אותו, ושאר דברים הצריכים לו. ואם אין יד הנותן משגת, נותן לו כפי השגת ידו. ואפילו עני המתפרנס מן הצדקה, חייב ליתן צדקה לאחר.
