The Pischay Teshuva (95:6), in defence of Shulchan Aruch, explains why R’ Tam would not suggest the use of ash to purge the yoreh gadolah (the biggest Midianite pot). The yoreh gadolah has issur (substance already prohibited) immebdded in itself. In contrast, Shulchan Aruch only permits ash in water to pogame (to impart an adverse taste in heter) the meat grease respectively and the milk respectively before they get a chance to cook together and become issur. Citing the Rema (87:6), Taz (95:15) also challenges the validity of ashes to pogame. The Rema discourages cooking in a vessel used to make shampoo because it has milk, meat and ash. In defence, Be’er Heitiv (87:18) writes, the vessel still shouldn’t be used because of the rabbinic prohibition [of using a vessel even though a day has elapsed since issur was absorbed (Y.D. 122:2)].
