The question of whether the coronavirus pandemic is to be treated as a Pikuach Nefesh situation can have many consequences both in regard to specific Halachic questions and also in the way it is perceived and dealt with in broad fashion. The following sub-topics are discussed: (1) Is Pikuach Nefesh for the broader community assessed differently than danger to an individual? (2) How do we determine what is considered Pikuach Nefesh?
