The purchase of Maarat HaMachpelah, the burial place of Sarah, is the first act of kinyan (purchase) in the Torah. The fact that this is the first acquisition of the Torah indicates that somehow it is the primary purchase on a Torah Shebichtav level. When we turn to Torah Shebeal Peh, we find that the act of kiddushin is the primary act of kinyan on the level of Chazal. In examining these two primary acts of kinyan, we come to a deep understanding to the nature and essence of a kinyan, and why it plays such an important role in how we live as well as how we die. (This shiur is the combination of two audio recordings from two consecutive days which were the two halves on one single shiur.)
