We are beginning פרק הבונה, Masechet Shabbat 102b and we seek to understand the concept בנין כל שהוא. We suggest that the sugya is presenting three different views on בנין כל שהוא as a separate category of Meleches Bilyan. R' Yirmiya postulates that a hole in the ground is Binyan. Abaya rejects this concept and presents an alternative definition: we are talking about creating a structural change in an object. Rav Acha has a third opinion. Fixing and improving a structure, even without changing it, is also included in the חיוב בונה. The last part of today's shiur will introduce the insights of the Rosh Yeshiva, HaRav Isser Zalman Meltzer, to the two elements that define אב מלאכת בונה.
