We begin the Mishna in Masechet Shabbat 73a with an introduction to Perek Klal Gadol and מלאכת שבת. Why did the Mishna tell me that there are 39 מלאכות? We will analyze two approaches: (a) the maximum number of חטאות that one could be חייב on a particular שגגה בשבת; (2) the maximum number of התראות that one would need to give to be מחייב a deliberate violator of Shabbat. The latter approach assumes that a תולדה would require a התראה בשם האב.
