In this shiur we seek to compare Chatzi Shiur in universal Halacha, e.g. אכילת חצי כזית in the case of forbidden foods or a Mitzva of Achila, to Chatzi Shiur in Meleches Shabos. We will see that Rashi in Masechet Shabos applies Chatzi Shiur to Shabos. The Rashbam however assumes that the problem with Chatzi Shiur on Shabos is the lack of מלאכת מחשבת. R' Menachem Zemba (ה' יקום דמו) interprets the Rasham as saying that Chatzi Shiur in Shabos is not a מלאכה at all, and on a Torah level would be permitted. If one baked half a גרוגרת or carried the same, he would not violate a מלאכה. The same would be true if he wrote only one letter. We will complete the essay of R' Zemba later this week.
