In this shiur for Masechet Bava Kamma 98b we offer an introduction to the sugya of אומן קונה בשבח כלי, a principle which underlies the Mishna of the carpenter who damaged the utensil he was hired to fix. Does the carpenter own the utensil he fashioned from the wood he was given? When & how does the בעה"ב who commissioned him acquire the utensil? Until that moment is there a partnership on the utensil, one owns the basis wood & the other the appreciation? We will study a variety of approaches & definitions of this concept.
