Description

In the second half of Parshat Behaalotcha, there is one long narrative that reads as an odd intersection of Klal Yisrael's demand for meat and the establishment of the Sanhedrin through the receiving of prophecy. Why are these two seemingly unrelated stories merged together? We explore the fundamental tension between physical desire and the attainment of prophecy as well as the reason that this tension emerges specifically at this point in Chumash. We link all of these concepts into the end of the Parsha as well, discussing how they connect to Miriam's lashon harah and the description of Moshe's unique level of prophecy.
