The sugya defines the case of our Mishna of two holding on to a Talis. The sugya - Bava Metzia 7a-b - discusses the case of a מלוה & his לוה who are together holding on to the שטר (loan document). This will lead to a fundamental analysis of the nature of קיום שטרות, the Rabbinic requirement to authenticate the signatures on the Shtar. Did the Rabbanan remove the status of the Shtar without Kiyum? Or did they expose the Shtar to the counter claim of the לוה that the document is a counterfeit? If the latter is the case then once the borrower admits that the document is authentic, his claim 'I paid you" is not accepted. This becomes the issue of debate between Rebby & Rebby Shimon.
