Description
The King is the embodiment of political power in the Tanakh, and so in our first class on Jewish Political Thought we study carefully the passages in the Torah about the appointment of a King. Is it one of the greatest of all mitzvoth or is it viewed with skepticism, an accommodation to the people’s request. What do the commandments and limits given to the King imply about how the Torah views kingship and political power? The shiur concludes with looking at the establishment of the monarchy in the time of the prophet Shmuel.
