We wish to begin our study of Masechet Niddah 57b: the concept of הרגשה derived by Shmuel from the verse in the Torah. We will offer an introduction to the Halacha of כתמים. Why does the Torah require הרגשה? Is it a matter of clarification, i.e. to establish without any doubt that the דם came from her בית הערוה? Or shall we assume that the requirement of הרגשה is a condition - set by the Torah - for the change in the status of the woman from that of a Tehora to that of a Temaah? Or is there a combination of both these definitions? We will see that this is a great controversy amongst the Rishonim and the difference will be in a case where even without הרגשה we have clear evidence as to the source of the Dam.
