Description

In 1810, the newly constituted official rabbinate of Westphalia permitted kiniyot. R. Moshe Sofer, the Chatam Sofer, was asked about the acceptability of this move. Mindful of the political implications of undermining the rabbinate of another land (especially as Napoleon was spreading Emancipation across the Continent), Chatam Sofer nevertheless manages to draw a bold line.
