The Mishna in Masechet Kiddushin 56b addresses the issue of המקדש באיסורי הנאה. In this category we have nine examples and the sugya will seek the sources for each of these. But why is the kiddushin invalid? Is it because he gave nothing he can claim is his? Or is it that she did not receive anything of value? The bulk of the sugya discusses the case of עגלה ערופה and its equation to ציפורי מצורע. The great debate between R' Yochanan & Reish Lakish regarding the precise moment at which the Issur HaNa'ah of the ציפורים is generated. Is it the שחיטה of the one bird that engenders the Issur, or is it the very designation of the bird (לקיחה) at a much earlier time which generates the Issur?
