Viewing reward and punishment through the model of the carrot and stick is a primitive way of looking at these concepts. A more advanced way of thinking about reward and punishment is to realize that when one chooses good or evil. that choice makes the good or the evil an intrinsic part of ones character. This intrinsic factor of good or evil then naturally causes a positive or negative reaction within oneself. The experience of that reaction is the reward or the punishment.
