In today's study of Halacha for Purim we will analyze the nature and objective of the mitzva of מתנות לאביונים. Our basic question is the following: is the mitzva an application of the universal mitzva of Tzedaka, just that the rest of the year the mitzva is conditional & unrelated to the day itself wheras on the day of Purim this becomes an absolute obligation? Or is מתנות לאביונים engendered by the Mitzva of Purim & is a new mitzva independent of the general mitzva of Tzedaka? If the latter definition is correct then there is a fundamental connection between this mitzva & the mitzva of משלח מנות. In this shiur we will analyze the many Halichic q's that depend upon these tow definitions.
