In Parshat Shmini, Aharon and his sons are charged with being the leaders in Israel to distinguish between taharah and tumah. We often translate these words are pure and impure or clean and unclean. We discuss the dangers of these imprecise translations, why these concepts are so difficult engage, and how to properly understand them in a way that both brings them to life in a meaningful way and opens up the door to the next stage of Sefer Vayikra.
